A flat (or beam) blade has none of the metal frame of a conventional blade. Pressure on the glass is spread by an internal flexible strip along the full length of the rubber, so the wipe is even, including on curved windshields. The low aerodynamic profile keeps the blade pressed to the glass at high speed.
