The amount of air entering the engine is the base value for fuel metering. A MAF (mass air flow) sensor measures the air mass directly in the intake duct; a MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor measures pressure in the manifold and the control unit calculates the mass from it. An inaccurate sensor causes high consumption, smoke and loss of power.
