The lambda (oxygen) sensor measures the oxygen left in the exhaust gas. The control unit uses it to hold the air-fuel mixture at the right ratio so the catalytic converter works efficiently and consumption stays low. Level sensors measure engine oil or other fluid levels and warn when they drop.
